hi karen! my name is jenan and i just got accepted to RISD for graphic design. i stumbled upon your videos today and they were really helpful haha ^_^ and i was wondering if you had any tips or anything really that you could tell me about the program :) alsooo i was wondering if you had any preferences for the dorms, thanks! and congrats on ur job with youtube! :D
Congrats on getting in! For freshman dorms, South has air conditioning, and both South and East have suites instead of a hallway of rooms with one communal bathroom. Homer and Nickerson are basically the same, though I think Homer has more workrooms. When you get there, see if you can get all the way from East to South without going outside. I promise it can be done, but you might have to do a bit of exploring :D
i know this was forever ago, but i just remembered that during josh sundquist's new york city book signing, i sat like directly behind you. well more like behind you but a little bit to the left. anyway, yes. but back then i didnt know who you were. and then somehow i discovered your videos, and i love them!
haha, that’s awesome. I love when people recognize each other from past events. During Playlist I found out that a ton of people I know now were at 789, which I went to back when I had almost no YouTube friends, and it’s crazy that we were all in the same place at the same time so long ago.
ive been a kk fan for about a year now. your videos are uplifting and educational, or at leats thats how i feel after watching them. you actually inspired me to apply as a transfer to art schools, including risd. so my question is: during your time at risd, did you hear of anyone getting in with good art despite poor grades? or are all the students there academically as well as artistically proficient. thanks :)
Thanks so much! To be honest, I have no idea what everyone else’s grades before RISD were. But so long as you didn’t fail everything, you should still have a shot. Good luck!
I'm running into a problem installing new fonts. If a font has multiple files for different weights and formats, my computer only recognizes one & can't find the others. Any idea what's going on? (I've had this problem on OSX & Windows 7)
I’m sorry, I don’t know why that would be happening. Have you tried installing Linotype FontExplorerX? That’s the program I use to organize my fonts, and I’ve never had any trouble with it. The only other thing I can think of is to be sure you’re downloading font files from legit websites, and not like, coolfreefonts.biz.net. But, if none of that helps, Google is your friend. Good luck!
would any of you happen to be in Providence tomorrow afternoon
i’ve got a free afternoon and i don’t know what to do with it
There’s tons of stuff to explore in Providence. You need to get pizza at Nice Slice on Thayer St, and walk around Brown which has a gorgeous campus. Or walk down Westminster St into downtown Providence where there are a bunch of cute independent shops. And if you walk down the river towards Wickenden St, there are a few cool sculptures to check out.
I know this probably isn't exactly your area of expertise, but how good is RISD's film school? Thanks!
I never actually took any classes in the film department, and I didn’t have any close friends in that major, so I’m afraid I can’t really give any information you couldn’t easily Google yourself. I did go to one of the showings of the seniors’ final projects last year though, and some of the films and animations were fantastic.
Hey Karen! I was just wondering whether if you know if there's a significant difference between the art programs in RISD and Cooper Union? By the way you're fantastic and awesome and I want to make things that are as amazing as yours. You've helped me develop a true interest in graphic design/advertising and for that I thank you so much! :D
Every school has a different curriculum and approach to teaching design. I never attended Cooper Union, so I can’t speak specifically about their program. But they’re both great schools, so I’d suggest visiting both and judging for yourself which one best fits what you’re looking for.
I'm a 18year old artstudent who made the decision to study graphic design. You where one of the persons who made me believe in myself and let me make the right choice even though my teachers always said graphic design was my thing, you made me interested in it! Just wanted to say thanks.
Other than RISD (which I already know is great), do you know of any other good Canadian/American art schools?
My second choice after RISD would have been FIT or SVA, though they’re both right in the middle of Manhattan, so you have to be sure you’re ready for that environment. I was also accepted to MICA, but I really didn’t want to be in Baltimore. Pratt is great, and I’ve heard mixed reviews on Parsons. But the US is a big place, so just do a google search for “art schools in ____” and I’m sure you’ll find plenty of resources and reviews.
Hello Karen! I'm a huge fan of your work. I know that you really like the author Darren Shan and I was wondering if you too are excited about his new series of books about Zombies.
I haven’t actually read any of his new books since the 4th Demonata book. That was right around when I started getting really into Harry Potter, and I just didn’t find his new series as compelling as Cirque Du Freak. I doubt I’ll ever catch up on everything, but the Cirque Du Freak series will always have a special place in my heart as my first internet book fandom :)
I'm really sorry if you've had problems with creepers stalking you. That must royally suck. Just know that there are a lot of normal people out there who really enjoy what you create for teh interwebs. Much admiration!
Not at all, no creepers! I just feel bad when people try to get in touch through venues I don’t reply to, and I wanted to list everything out so it’s more clear.
